Garlic a potential crop for exporting to South Asian countries





Introduction –
Rajasthan in itself resides a huge potential for export, it’s just a matter of identification of the potential area and the time to invest. According to National Horticulture Board, Rajasthan is number one in terms of production of garlic with 52.87% share. My home town, Kota, also known as garlic bowl of Rajasthan produces around 90% of the total production. The climatic conditions and the soil type are favorable for growing of the garlic crop. Amongst the production of garlic in Rajasthan, Kota comes second after the Baran district. These two districts have the huge potential to export.
Garlic is employed for several conditions associated with the center and blood system.. These conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Coronary heart disease, heart attack, reduced blood flow.
According to APEDA, India comes 2nd after China in terms of production and market share. China have captured the market for garlic all around the world, India has potential to take advantage of situations, recently in 2017, Asian countries like Vietnam, Philippines and Taiwan has shifted their purchases to India over South China Sea dispute issues. India is exporting garlic to Thailand via Malaysia, Pakistan, USA, Nepal and some African countries. India has seen a highest growth among the top performing ones like chilly, cumin and spice oleoresins.

Garlic Products –
1. Garlic scapes- used for cooking purpose
2. Garlic flex- used in liquid dishes that undergo some cooking time, to release garlic flavour
3. Garlic tablets- for treating blood pressure, colon cancer, coronary artery disease
4. Garlic powder- used for seasoning purpose
5. Garlic Insecticides- effective against aphids, beetles, whiteflies, spider mites, moths etc
In Kota district of Rajasthan, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) under Agriculture University, Kota with the help of ICAR is providing training program for value addition and packaging of garlic and its product. The KVK is training the garlic growing farmers to make them entrepreneur. For a matter of fact want to share a some good initiative KVK has done for farmers, under the training program they are training the farmers to develop tablets of garlic, and the market price of this is around Rs 400 for 40 gm, Hence giving farmers a way to be self sufficient.

Global Scenario of garlic
China and India are the major raw garlic production region, additionally the dehydrated garlic commerce countries.

Export by country-
Malaysia was the main importer of garlic exports from India, moreover garlic exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination. Indonesia ranked third in terms of total exports. In value terms, Malaysia remains the key foreign market for garlic export from India, with second position Indonesia comes and it was followed by Thailand

Agri Supply Chain of garlic-
The Kota region i.e Kota, Baran & Chittorgarh are the leading producer for trading purpose of garlic. Garlic is Rabi season crop however it can be taken twice a year i.e., June – July and October - November. The main harvesting season of garlic is from February to April.

Here in Chippabarod (Baran) there is APMC known for marketing of garlic. The farmers with the help of local traders bring their produce to the APMC where they are sold out. There share in consumer’s rupee is 45% only.

Other ways of marketing the garlic commodity by
1. Direct marketing- marketing directly to the customers and eliminating the middlemen. It provides large incentives to large firms.
2. Contract farming- it is essentially a tie up by buyer and the farmer
3. Private Players- Private market is also a new alternative for the farmers where they can sell their produce.

Financial part of garlic production
This crop is the burning topic for the farmers of Rajasthan. Sometimes the crop market rises to whooping Rs 100/kg and next time it will be rock bottom to Rs 15/Kg. garlic growing is expensive but also found to give high returns to farmers. On an average the total cost for 1 acre garlic cultivation = Rs 27,500. Farmers can get a yield between 32-48 quintals from 1 acre land if we consider 40 quintals as an average yield and market price for quintal of garlic is Rs 5000. Therefore a farmer can obtain a income of 2 lakhs rupees in one acre of garlic.

Administrative aspects-
At international level, every commodity that has to be exported or imported is provided a code under HS Coding or HSN system. The HS Code for garlic is 0703. In many states commerce industry or MSME departments are recognized as nodal department for export promotion also there are also private players who can develop the contact to the buyers and facilitate international trade. Usually a exporter has to establish a company and get Importer-Exporter (IEC) number which is provided by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). After availing the authorization a Registration cum Membership Certificate (RCME) granted by Export Promotion Councils/ FIEO/Commodity Boards/Authorities is obtained.
